The Billings Ovulation Method® for Natural Fertility Awareness

What is Natural Fertility Awareness?

Natural Fertility Awareness gives couples knowledge of their own fertility. A couple can learn to identify when they are fertile, and can observe how the day to day pattern and stresses of life can affect their fertility. With this knowledge, they can work together to achieve or avoid pregnancy.

Many couples, even couples who have been married for years, find natural fertility awareness deepens their physical and emotional understanding of each other, and brings them closer together in loving co-operation.

The Billings Ovulation Method® is an extensively researched tool for natural fertility awareness that has been used and developed for over 50 years. This method is taught locally, with the support of the team at Billings Method England.

How does it work?

A couple learn to identify fertile periods within the woman’s cycle by observing changes in her cervical mucus. These observations are, with instruction, easy to learn, quick and simple to record, and entirely non-invasive.

Using this information, a couple can decide to postpone or avoid pregnancy by abstaining from intercourse, or can try and achieve pregnancy.

Who is it for?

The Billings Ovulation Method® can be used by women with regular and irregular cycles; it can also be taught during breastfeeding and during the menopause.

The Billings Ovulation Method® has been shown to be highly effective in couples wishing to avoid or postpone pregnancy. Conversely, it has also helped many couples with reduced fertility achieve pregnancy.

Some people use it simply to monitor their reproductive health and to learn more about their own body.

Is it difficult?

No. The Billings Ovulation Method® has been taught all over the world, to women of all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. It requires no special equipment. However, it is a new skill and a new way of thinking for many people, and it can take a few weeks to learn. Individual initial instruction, followed by the support and guidance of a teacher, really does make all the difference.

Is it expensive?

No. A suggested voluntary donation of £50 helps towards the costs of teachers’ training, and includes all your literature and materials, and as much teaching time as you need until you no longer need help. However, if money is a problem, it can be discussed.
